.::: JENNIFER CORTEZ BIOGRAPHY :::.
Jennifer Cortez also known by her stage name, "The Prof", is a Canadian/Ecuadorian artist, and singer/songwriter. Born in Toronto, Canada, and raised in Toronto and Scarborough during elementary years, Jennifer was heavily influenced by R&B, reggae, hip hop and Latin music, as well as diversity and multiculturalism in her community.
Jennifer's mother and grandmother were both recording artists in Ecuador, South America, known for their vinyl record, entitled, "Cantares Ecuatorianos". Inspired by her family's musical roots, Jennifer began singing lessons at age 12 and officially in the early 2000s, Jennifer began writing original lyrics, collaborating with local artists and performing locally at events, causes and fundraisers such as, Amnesty International (Human Rights), Culture Days in Mississauga City Hall, Woman's International Day events, Toronto's Latin Community Fundraisers for Natural Disasters & Earthquakes in Ecuador, and the Inti Raymi Festival.
Jennifer's single "The Latin Anthem (Himno Latino)" ft. Juno Nominee Arabesque a song written to empower Latin women rotated on several media outlets and hit Toronto radio waves, supported by both the Toronto Latin and Urban community in 2008. "The Latin Anthem (Himno Latino)" is featured on her physical, CD album, entitled, "Through the Rain" by Jennifer Cortez which can be found on all digital platforms.
The stage name, "The Prof" originated from Jennifer's Professor role at Humber College in 2017, teaching for the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts and the Faculty of Business which led Jennifer to obtain a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education, Administration and Leadership in 2021 from Royal Roads University. In 2023, Jennifer also began teaching at Sheridan College, Hazel McCallion campus in Mississauga for the Pilon School of Business.
Hoping to make an impact through her music, Jennifer writes her own lyrics and has written on topics such as women empowerment through original songs "My Way" - The Prof ft. Abhithi and "Himno Latino (The Latin Anthem)" - Jennifer Cortez ft. Arabesque, as well as the importance of mental health wellness through her songs, "Peek-a-boo" - The Prof, and motivational but vulnerable songs such as "Through the Rain" - Jennifer Cortez, on triumph over adversity, Jennifer hopes to inspire, empower and motivate through her musical works.
Jennifer Cortez is also a Latin Excellence Award Recipient 2024 presented by Fuerza Latina & Toronto Metropolitan University and is being recognized as one of the community leaders for her dedicated voluntary work with students from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Moreover, Jennifer has been nominated for a Mississauga Music Award 2024 in the Emerging Talent of the Year category.
